Renunciation of citizenship

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova, with legal and habitual residence on the territory of the USA and who previously obtained the approval of the Public Services Agency regarding authorized emigration to the USA, can submit the application to renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova at the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the USA.

To renounce citizenship, the applicant will present the following documents:
  • autobiography in Romanian, indicating data on marital status, period of study and graduation from educational institutions, date of emigration from Moldova, date of receipt of residency documents in the USA, home address, previous and current workplace, data on spouse/ wife and about first degree relatives (parents, children);
  • the valid Moldovan passport, with the applied stamp regarding the authorization of emigration to the USA;
  • valid US passport, or naturalization certificate (legalized with apostille, translated into Romanian with apostille) US driver's license, US ID; In other cases - the guarantee of acquiring US citizenship, valid for at least one year from the moment of submitting the application (legalized with an apostille, translated into Romanian with an apostille);
  • moldovan civil status documents of the applicant and his minor children; (birth, marriage/divorce certificate; change of name and/or first name, spouse's death certificate;
  • moldovan civil status documents of minor children up to the age of 18;
  • the certificate issued by the competent US vital record authority regarding the applicant's family members (certificate from the residence about the composition of the family);
  • four recent photos, 2x2 inches, color, matte, on a white background.
  • confirmation of payment of consular fees.
Parents who renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova can submit a request to retain Moldovan citizenship for their minor children. In the case of renouncing citizenship together with minor children (up to the age of 18), in addition to the above-mentioned documents, the following is attached:
  • The notarized declaration of the child between the ages of 14 and 18 regarding his consent for renouncing the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova together with the parent and the notarized copy of his birth certificate. If the notarial declaration is drawn up by an American notary, the notarial act must be legalized with an apostille, translated into Romanian with an apostille;
  • If both parents are citizens of the Republic of Moldova and one of them renounces citizenship together with the minor child, the notarized consent of the other parent regarding the acceptance of the child renouncing citizenship together with another parent must be presented, the documents must be legalized with an apostille, translated in Romanian with apostille.

All the documents mentioned above are mandatory and must be presented in original. All documents issued by the US authorities must be legalized with an Apostille applied to the documents, correctly translated into Romanian and legalized with an Apostille. In the case of possession of the civil status documents issued by the US authorities for the submission of the application regarding the renunciation of citizenship, the procedure for transcribing the documents mentioned in the corresponding column follows, until the submission of the application for renunciation.
